Fashion (Able) Police

KARACHI:  Exactly two months ago, when spring began descending into odious summer, the local police candidly declared that their characteristic grumpiness was not a personality trait intrinsic to their job but was in fact brought on by the dark colours of their uniform. Thus given that fashion has become pervasive in Pakistan in the last few years, The Express Tribune picked on some of fashion’s exciting new talents to redesign the police uniform. While we were hoping the designers would show their funky and bohemian flare, often spotted in their collections on the ramp, the sketches show a different and rather mature approach.
Akif Mahmood
“I wanted to make it very simple since it is a uniform and requires practicality. Instead of the typical black though, I have a white and lime printed shirt. White works best for men because the weather is mostly sunny and warm in Pakistan. I have added a waistcoat with pockets which is not only fashionable, but will also prove useful to hold all their arms,” explains Mahmood. However, he adds that one can’t be completely fashion-centric because most policemen are older and experimental designs appeal to youngsters more. The designer, who is a fan of denim, has suggested nontreated denim for the pants. “Denim would give a cool feel to the overall look. The whole point is to make the typical uniform interesting and presentable. Also given the popularity of films like Dabanng, policemen are also viewed as icons.”
Wardha Saleem
“This is my vision of how I want to see a policeman. I have used white for the pants not just because it repels heat but because the colour symbolises purity and power. We all expect the police to be this agent of fairness and justice and also expect them to have authority,” states Saleem. The designer has used turquoise, which is supposed to balance out the look since it is a neutral and fresh colour. “I wanted them to feel good about themselves yet not lose their strong image,” says Saleem.
Adnan Pardesy
“I have given the cops cargo pants in poplin cotton instead of twill fabric that is typically used. The cotton is lighter and makes for ease of movement in the summer. Overall, I have retained the blue details of the current uniform but used white as the base,” states Pardesy. For the top, the designer has suggested a polo t-shirt in 60/2 mercerised cotton fabric, which is basically a mix fabric that is easy to wash and wear and doesn’t dull out even after multiple washes. “The polo also gives a formal feel to the uniform and will keep the men cooler yet give them the air of authority. And the best part is that it is extremely cheap to make,” he adds.
Irfan Ali
“Whenever I think of the Pakistani police, the associated emotion that the term ignites is fear. Yet, as a fashion designer when I visualise the police I think of a sleek and smart look. I wanted to therefore go for a modern, minimalistic look that every police man can carry off,” says Ali. The designer states that since Pakistani police comes from all classes, he chose not to be too experimental with design. “The look is very simple. The cotton under-shirt is in an off-white colour and the upper jacket is dull green with 3D pockets, along with the necessary police monograms. The trousers are grey instead of black and are paired with long boots,” concludes the designer.
Mohsin Ali
“I was thinking of the ancient subcontinental silhouettes of an angharkha, but wanted to make something modern with a twist of history in it. Since it’s so hot in Pakistan, the pants are airy from the hip but tight from below to give a slightly fashionable look,” says Ali. A cool wool is used for the gloves to repel heat and the scarf is added to absorb perspiration. The designer adds, “I also wanted to give the police men solar hats in two layers that create a vacuum in between for air supply.” The colours used in Ali’s creation are very light and the designer has used grey instead of white, “since white gets soiled easily in this dusty weather”.

Just married: Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan at their wedding ceremony

Not a style icon yet? Store where Mrs Zuckerberg bought wedding dress hasn't sold ANY more since ceremony

The wedding dress store where Priscilla Chan bought the gown she married Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg in has failed to see a bounce in business.
The Little White Dress shop in Denver hasn't noted a single person purchasing the $4,700 Claire Pettibone designed gown, one whole week after the Facebook multi-billionaire married long-term girlfriend Chan at his Palo Alto home.
Reporting that a number of people have come into the shop to try the dress on, the Little White Dress shop has also seen a 680 per cent increase in web traffic since the nuptials.

The Facebook co-founder and CEO married after nine years together in a ceremony which took the media by surprise, but is rumoured to have been planned by the couple since before October according to the New York Post
Despite food and drink for the wedding being photographed arriving to the Californian home of Zuckerberg, it was assumed they were for a party to celebrate Chan's recent graduation from medical school.

Hosting 100 guests at their $7million home, the couple were married the day after Facebook's much vaunted IPO, which valued the social networking giant at over $100billion.
Although Zuckerberg is a multi-billionaire, he gave his wife a ruby wedding ring bookended by two diamonds that was estimated by one jeweler to be worth $25,000.

Guests at the wedding enjoyed simple food from the newly wed's favourite Palo Alto Mexican and Japanese restaurants, Palo Alto Sol and Fuki Sushi, with the Mexican entrees reportedly costing $7.50 for each person.
Despite the highly anticipated IPO, shares in Facebook endured a bumpy week, ending at $31.91, down from $38 at the launch.
The firm is now being investigated by regulators and some shareholders have sued Facebook, the banks involved in the share issue and NASDAQ.

The lack of confirmed interest in Chan's wedding dress is in stark contrast to last year's most anticipated wedding gown and ceremony - that of Kate Middleton in her marriage to Prince William.
Hours after her Alexander McQueen gown designed by Sarah Burton was unveiled last year designers across the globe raced to produce their own cut-price versions for brides-to-be.
A New York based eveningwear company called Faviana produced a version of the famous dress for $1,800 and even managed to create a version of the equally famous bridesmaid dress worn by Middleton's sister Pippa for $350.

Foot Care | Suggestions and Natural Care

Foot Care, Suggestions and Natural Care
Feet are often, the most neglected part of the human body.

      Foot Care Regimen
It is suggested that everyone go in for a basic pedicure every two weeks. Feet dipped in warm water to which a little shampoo and vegetable oil has been added provides a good starting point. Let the feet soak for 10 - 15 minutes, before rubbing them (especially soles) with a pumice stone. This is the time to clean the nails and remove all old nail polishes.

Regular foot exercise helps to keep feet fit. Curl your toes simulating the action of trying to pick up something with your feet. Do this for ten minutes every day to strengthen muscles and provide relief to aching feet

Get a foot massage done every two weeks by a professional. The rotating and kneading action, stimulates blood circulation and provides relief to aching foot muscles.

Another easy way to improve blood circulation in the feet are and to give relief to aching feet is a simple Hot and Cold foot bath. Prepare two basins. Put hot ( bearable) water in one to which a little (20 ml ) mustard oil has been added. In the second basin, put cold water. Let your feet soak in the hot water for up to 3- 4 minutes and then shift the feet to cold water basin. Repeat this between 5 to 7 times and then dry the feet thoroughly with a rough dry towel. It is advisable to apply some moisturizing cream on the feet after they are dry to replenish skin oils. Enjoy the sensation of relaxation that will envelop your feet.

Herbal - Natural Foot Care Tips

To soften rough feet, try this regimen every night before going to bed, for two weeks. Dip the feet in warm water containing a teaspoon of (preferably herbal) shampoo and one teaspoon of baking powder. Let them soak for 10- 15 minutes, before drying them. Apply a foot cream and then go to sleep.

Treat dry skin on the feet and cracked heels with this herbal remedy. Prepare a mixture with equal quantity of glycerin, fresh cream and honey. Apply this mixture to the feet, especially to the cracked heels and let it stay on for 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water. Try this every three days ( before sleeping) to find smooth feet and heels.

A easy pedicure which is fast and effective can be done easily at home. It is herbal and natural and fast acting. Add a few (four to five) drops of vinegar to four or five table spoons (40-50 grams) of curd and mix well in a dish. Rub this mixture well on the feet, ankles, heels and the soles of the feet especially between the toes. Let it stay on for ten minutes and then wash off with warm water. This process will rejuvenate the skin on the feet, removing dead cells and stimulating blood circulation.

If you have a tendency to develop cracks on your heels and are suffering from this painful condition, your feet require regular care. Try this natural remedy every three days before bed time. Immerse feet in warm water to which 10 ml lemon juice and 20 ml coconut oil has been added. Scrub the heel area after twenty minutes with a pumice stone. Dry thoroughly and apply a foot cream. The improvement can be seen after the second treatment and this can become a weekly feature after the first month.

Incase, you are looking for a home made moisturizer for the skin specially the feet, you can prepare one easily. Simply mix rose water and glycerin ( glycerin) in equal proportion and store, to be used when ever required, especially after foot care treatment. Replace this mixture every one month.
